No DLC for Piñata until it becomes a hit
Rare don’t want to work in vain after the Kameo and PDZ experience
It seems that Rare don’t want to work in vain. So after investing hours in different DLC packages for Kameo and PDZ, they decided to wait and see what happens with Viva Piñata before offering more goodies to the players. At least, that is what they have told Gamesindustry.biz in a recent interview that will be published next Friday.
“We’ve got plenty of ideas for what we can do with downloadable content because Piñata is such a unique game,” said Gregg Mayles, lead designer at Rare. “But the jury is still out.” Mayles also pointed out that is wiser to focus all the efforts in a new game rather than working on something without knowing if it is going to be a success or not.
Production Director Simon Farmer also talked about last year’s situation with Kameo: “There was a reasonable take-up on the free content, but the rest of it was reasonably limited, that was probably because the initial purchases of the 360 were the hardcore fans who perhaps wouldn’t have been drawn to Kameo, so were less likely to download that premium content.”
“For Rare that wasn’t a good way of gauging the market, as far as I’m concerned,” Farmer added. “From our perspective it’s all relatively new to us because we’ve always been cartridge based. We don’t know what the best possible model is for us.”
Anyway, the Piñata team does still consider the potential of Xbox Live and they seem to be eager to include future features for online players, as they already told us in MundoRare and stated through their official website.
According to Gamesindustry, Farmer added that the content Rare would like to create would have to be value for money from the consumers perspective, and he’s willing to observe other developers to see which methods yield the best results. Something completely reasonable, especially after the first downloadable accessories for Piñata, that weren’t worthy of their price.
