Stampede’s sorrow never dies
The neverending story of the racing game continues
Hundreds of players along the world have a new reason to continue with their whininess today. EGM published a new rumour in its January issue, this time concerning to what it might be Sabreman Stampede’s latest step into the official recognition as urban legend. So the game that started as Donkey Kong Racing for the GameCube back in 2001, later unofficially evolved into Sabreman Stampede for the Xbox, and finally allegedly cancelled, is back again and forever. And not only that, because its main characters are not longer trendy monkeys nor elder explorers. Now they seem to be… piñatas.
The idea would be to take the Viva Piñata IP and create some sort of spin-off as a kart racing game with it, which after all, was the same thing that happened with the original Diddy Kong Racing, the game that started it all by its well-earned success nearly ten years ago in N64. One way or another, the truth is that Stampede has always been a spin-off of something in all its stages. Gossip has related to it a wide range of characters along the years, such as Banjo or Conker. But Rare never confirmed officially its existence. Apparently, they prefer to toy around with the concept rather to kill the fun by solving the mystery and ruining the word-of-mouth publicity in the meanwhile.
So, is Stampede, whatever its new form may be, going to come out once and for all? Sure, why not. It might be by the end of 2007. Perhaps next decade. Bets are currently strong circa the fifth year of the fourth millennium. Anyway, EGM’s racing game could have nothing to do with the former Donkey Kong Racing, but the genre is undoubtedly linked to the sacred grail of Stampede for the fans.
On the other hand, with Rare choosing to be cautious by not releasing further DLC for Viva Piñata until they are sure the sales are worthy of it, it looks improbable that they may have been already working on another game using the same franchise.
But you know our motto when it comes about Rare today and everyday. Anything goes. So feel free to keep asking for Stampede. Heck, we even encourage you to do so, just to see what happens. Or doesn’t happen.
