Franchises touched by Rare grace enter 20 top-selling list

Bond and Donkey can't beat Mario

Mario is the indisputable King of videogames. That’s the main idea that we get from the 20 top-selling franchises of all time, a list released this week by the British newspaper The Independent. With 193 million units sold in history, even Pokémon can’t dare to beat the plumber with all his spin off titles.

A couple of franchises that once were touched by Rare have entered the list: Donkey Kong and James Bond. Both, without a doubt, are there thanks to Rare.

Nearly all the major Donkey Kong titles have been developed by Rare, and the successful SNES trilogy has also made it into Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance over the past years. Other important Rare titles with the DK license include Diddy Kong Racing (as the fastest selling game ever, back 1997) and DK64. With all this, Donkey Kong ranks 7th in the top-20 selling list with 48 million units sold, beyond the limits of Zelda and Sonic franchises.

With 30 million units in his own, secret agent James Bond ranks 15th in the list. N64 GoldenEye 007 is, by far, the most important Bond title ever released, and nearly one of every three Bond games ever sold is a copy of Rare’s blockbuster.

The complete list is as follows:

  1. Mario - Nintendo (193 million)
  2. Pokémon - Nintendo (155 million)
  3. Final Fantasy - Square-Enix (68 million)
