Piñata's daytime: sunrise in Japan, twilight in America
According to Gamasutra, Atsumare! Piñata (Viva Piñata in yakuza slang) has reached the top of the Xbox 360 software sales chart in Japan just one day after its official release, beating out previous multi-week favourite Lost Planet. The site with the porny domain points out that Piñata didn’t get many pre-orders a few days before its successful launch, what makes it even more unexpected.
Or wasn’t it?
The Japanese are widely known for their innate devotion to cuteness. Their admiration for lovely things is easily noticed in any design taken from their videogames, comic books or mangas, anime cartoons, urban signs or fashion trends. Heck, it can be noticed even in their postage stamps. Having said that, it’s no wonder they love Piñata or the Dead or Alive girls. However, they would hardly pay attention to any boorish and unsophisticatedly armoured space marine.
Such healthy tendency, rather than restricting their point of view, proves that Japan is probably the most mature market in terms of unconcern over prejudices. A place where people is not afraid of enjoying a kiddie looking feature while going as far as accepting tasteful sexual inputs as common part of their lives.
In the meantime, Westerners fire shotguns against muscled monsters, sigh for siliconized bitches and freak out about Janet Jackson’s nipple. There’s still so much to learn.
