Rare developing… Halo?!
General gossip after Rare being credited in Halo 3
Rumour has it that Bungie is leaving Microsoft. Normally, this would concern us as much as the mating of he common fly over the hills of Manchuria. After all, the only remarkable thing those people have done is the Halo trilogy, which basically makes them the archenemies of this website. However, their range of bad influence could be worryingly increased if they actually decide to break up with the Xbox and Microsoft deems appropriate to expand the Halo franchise with a fourth instalment.
Over the last days, a bunch of websites and bored fans have been fantasizing about the chance that some other studio could take the baton to extend the Halo saga beyond the three games that Bungie stated they would ever do. Why do people want so badly even more Halos is a question that not even the brightest minds of this century could answer. Let’s be clear. Halo sucks. No matter how you see it. It is a mediocre game with mediocre follow-ups that has absurdly become an icon of the gaming industry thanks to an overwhelming advertising campaign and the lack of a real commercial mainstay in the early catalogue of the first Xbox console period.
Unfortunately, the fact that Halo is a money-printing machine is as undeniable as its undeserved worldwide popularity. Which makes it one of those franchises that would hardly be ever left aside by their greedy owners. In a world full of titles like Tekken 6, Project Gotham Racing 4, Resident Evil 5 or Final Fantasy XIII, why should Microsoft abandon their most beloved game just after three episodes?
However, if Bungie are serious about their decision, who would develop the fourth Halo? People like Epic sound like the logic option. They would not only stay close to the original concept, but they would also make a much better game. And what if it’s Valve, or 2K Games?
The problem with all those companies is that they were not acquired by Microsoft for a ridiculously big amount of money and neither did they get involved in the development of any of the Halos before. But Rare did. They actually helped out Bungie with Halo 3. And they are an indivisible part of Microsoft Game Studios.
Will we ever see a Halo game developed by Rare? The sole idea makes me want to break into their Twycross HQ and start slapping people’s faces frantically. The good thing about it is that the game would be obviously better than the previous three and probably even enjoyable. Maybe this time it would be possible to notice some art design work and everything. But it would mean such a terrible waste of time and talent, when they already have plenty of good franchises to care about.
Let’s hope that these are only the delusions of a group of unsatisfied fans eager to get more. If that’s not the case, we’d better get ready for the Judgement Day.
