Fans still prefer Banjo’s original look

One out of three declares their love for the new model

Banjo is only the last Rare character who has suffered a complete change of look. Just before him Joanna Dark, Conker, Sabreman, and even the complete Jet Force team went through drastic changes. So, it’s not that strange that when the original Banjo title has arrived to its 10th anniversary, a redesign takes place.

Just after Rare showed the new aspect of Banjo in its 2007 Xmas Greeting Card, we asked our readers whether if they preferred the original Banjo look, the one from the X06 teaser trailer or the new polished one from Ryan Stevenson’s recent festive artwork.

Banjo’s look evolution

After more than 400 votes, the opinion of Rare fanbase is clear: it seems they still prefer the original N64 look that they have seen in half a dozen games since his DKR’s debut in 1997. An important 59% of Rare fans (238 votes) chose the option “Nothing like the original N64 look.”

Still, the new blocky look has received the 33% of support (136 votes), which means that one out of three MR visitors in this four weeks period “really LOVE it!” The remaining option reffering to this early blocky version (“Meh, I prefer the X06 one”) was voted by a slight 6% of Rare fans (27 votes).

Rare employees have already commented on this issue as well. Just a couple of days after Rare unveiled the bear & bird’s new look, game director Gregg Mayles offered his own vision of it in the December edition of Scribes: “Banjo’s new look resulted from Rare’s opinion that he needed an update. The previous games were very young-looking and the industry has moved on. Even younger gamers do not want their games to look overly young. We think the updated look has a distinctive style and really suits the whole theme of the new game (of course this means absolutely nothing to you at the moment as we haven’t revealed what it is).”

The Banjo-Kazooie 3 team keeps lips sealed regarding this project, but the official release date is indeed 2008, so we may discover what Mayles was talking about just in the near future.
