GoldenEye 007 drama takes the Net

The gaming world prays for downloadable versions

It’s been some time since we first talked about the GoldenEye 007 for XBLA issue. Back in the day it was all about an unknown guy who posted a few facts in a forum followed by a never-before-seen screenshot. Well, that was quite a start actually. But in any case, today we have dozens of websites spreading dozens of versions of the same story, people claiming that Rare is planning updates for any N64 classic on sight and even a 3 and a half minutes long video of the popular GoldenEye 007 remake itself on Youtube.

Either somebody is getting his hands really dirty to make sure that everybody knows about this or we all are being part of a calculated farce.

Although Nintendo or Activision have not made any comments regarding this matter, Microsoft and Rare recently did through the Xbox Live guru Major Nelson and their Community Manager, respectively. Nelson updated his personal Twitter, one of those annoying social networking tools, by saying that he would “pass all the Save GoldenEye emails” he was getting “to the right people.” In other words, he openly acted like if the game actually existed.

As for Rare’s Community Manager George Kelion, he dropped a brief comment in Rare Witch Project’s forums stating how “pleasantly surprised” were the people at Twycross after another fansite, Rare-Elite, decided to call a petition online for GoldenEye that has collected more than 18,000 signatures so far.

Whatever the real reasons were to cancel the GoldenEye Xbox Live remake, what seems hard to deny right now is that the game actually exists. Will it eventually find its way towards the Xbox Live Arcade or the Virtual Console after all? That’s the new question we should ask ourselves.
