Death, Destruction, and Doom… or only Delusion?

Coming on the same day as Duke Nukem Forever!

If there’s one rumour that has never ever died, it’s the rumour that Killer Instinct 3 will be coming soon. No matter how many times Rare has denied it in Scribes, the rumours just keep on coming. This one, however, comes from 1Up.com’s Quartermann, and if you know what he’s famous for in EGM’s magazine, then you know that this is far from an ordinary rumour.

Apparently, according to the Q-mann himself, “Rare is currently hard at work on a new Killer Instinct offering for Xbox 360 tentatively titled Killer Instinct 3D: Death, Destruction, and Doom. Word has it that the plasticized 2D visuals and mash-happy gameplay have been wisely bulldozed in favor of fully 3D graphics and a more refined combat system.” It is also reported that “the game looks “rather early” yet “promising,” and tell us to expect a hasty denial from the cheeky lads at Rare.”

Killer Instinct 3D: Death, Destruction, and Doom, eh? If that title sounds familiar to you, that’s because it might be exactly what you’re thinking of. During that tour to Rare that led to B-Day (and Pre-B-Day), there was a piece of paper that had that same title in Rare’s HQ… which also happened to house old KI renders. It also, joke or not, mentioned “3+ players” and a couple of graphics issues.

Stop 'n' Swop

A few things to note before we just throw this away until we hear this for the 34th time: The Quartermann is well known for reporting rumours that come true, about, oh… 85 percent of the time. When you have that high of a success rate (or even higher), again, this is far from just mere conjecture. Reading over that paper presents no evidence of a “refined combat system,” so Rare is either teasing the Q’s sources, or there’s something legitimate that he knows and we don’t (yet).

Yet, when you put that in perspective with Rare’s constant denials and that “rather early” comment, it’s hard to say whether this will actually come out. It’s become such a joke among Rare fans that it would literally be hard to believe if, somehow, screenshots would be leaked months from now. One thing’s for sure, as long as the classic elements come back and we could still be able to pull off easy combos with the “more refined combat system,” as we were able to in KI, KI2, and Gold, then consider me cautiously optimistic for this one. When and if that day will ever come. Only time, Rare, and LOG himself can tell.

wow¡¡¡ thats cool, but… WHAT ABOUT CONKER´S SEQUEL, i mean if they are making a new KI why not a conker sequel?????

Couple of reasons. First, Seavor (creator of Conker) stated that he’s sick of the franchise. After the time he spent creating Conker’s Quest, then Twelve Tales, then BFD, you can’t really blame him. Second, a KI sequel has been in demand for YEARS. Compare the last KI game coming out in 1996, with BFD releasing in 2001 and then again in 2005 in Live & Reloaded. That’s almost 12 years, more than 7 years, and almost 3 years, respectively.

It’s only natural (and very unfortunate) that we’re not getting a Conker sequel seeing how Seavor is working on something that’s not Conker related. Personally, I would take this KI3D: D,D,&D rumour with a grain of salt; it could happen, but then again, it could’ve happened all the other times it’s been said to have been in development over the years.
