Rare accepts Wwise audio solutions
The new software simplifies the development process
Audiokinetic, a Canadian software company that develops audio solutions for the video game industry, has announced this week that “Rare Ltd will use its award-winning audio pipeline solution, Wwise, for the development of several upcoming titles.” Microsoft Game Studios had already signed a long-term licensing agreement with Audiokinetic in 2006.
What is exactly Wwise, you wonder? With a strong promotional language the company itself says that Wwise “increases productivity and simplifies the development process, giving game developers the flexibility, toolsets, and workflow necessary to dramatically advance the gaming experience.” If you prefer a more neutral source, according to Wikipedia the application “centralizes all aspects of audio creation in a graphical interface to simplify the audio creation workflow. The functionalities in this interface allow sound designers to: build audio structures (including Interactive Music structures), define audio behaviors, edit and mix in real-time, define audio propagation and environments, simulate audio game play and environments, manage sound integration, and profile performance and audio behaviors.”
Rare’s musical director, Robin Beanland, commented on the benefits of this software: “Day after day, we realize that Wwise has got absolutely everything we need: real-time auditioning, advanced profiling capabilities, a comprehensive interactive music feature set, etc. It’s all there and totally straight forward. One of our projects developed with Wwise has a very short development cycle,” he claimed.
Regarding the support received, Beanland didn’t doubt to shower them with praise: “Since day 1, the Audiokinetic team has been amazing in supporting us, making sure that no time is wasted. They’re as dedicated to our project as we are, and it is very comforting to know that we have an extra team of 25 people to rely on.”
So, there you have it, from now on we can expect even more immersive audio environments from the upcoming Rare titles! Will Banjo or Piñata be two of them?
