Burton claims that we’ll see both new and old IP from Rare

Reiterates Nuts & Bolts and the Avatars’ Origin

Nick Burton loves to speak. And here we love him for it, because not only do we get a little extra information on current upcoming games, but what to expect in the future. But first, let’s get the games/programs we know out of the way first.

The Avatars. We’ve heard about them before and since E3, and we even have video interviews explaining exactly how they came about. What else is new?

”How it actually started… I’m pretty sure it came out of one of our other products… and they just kept refining… it’s like chipping away at the coalface, basically – “It’s good, but it could be more’, and obviously that was coming from the Microsoft side, as well.”

Burton adds, ”At one point I’d heard, ‘Microsoft copies Wii!’ And it’s like “Well, no”. Avatars exist everywhere. (They) just didn’t pop in the console space. You go to Second Life, play Oblivion, for goodness sake! They’re all there. It’s just unifying it a bit, giving people that identity. Yeah, Nintendo found the way and started it, then the refinement process starts. Sony are doing it with Home.”

banjo

Regarding Banjo, Burton feels like that Nuts & Bolts was the right decision despite the criticism it has received since E3. “Then it’s a double-edged sword. What would have happened had it been ‘Banjo 3′ as everyone was going to imagine. If it was like Tooie was but it was HD. Everyone would have gone, “It’s just Banjo 3, they could have done something new with it”. So, it’s kind of, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s not the fault of anybody who feels like that, it’s just that they’ve got their ideal that they’re hoping for.”, said Burton.

Last but not least, Burton talks about the game he’s working on in total non-committal form: “it’s very exciting, it’s a kind of… ‘genre’ of game is the wrong word. It’s a sort of game I really like, and it’s something different, as well, which is quite exciting.

I’m doing some things that are different on it, too. It’s quite a trade-off. I’m a graphics effects programmer, but I’m doing the audio stuff. It’s not just the audio in terms of software, it’s all other kinds of things that are going on with the software. It’s quite interesting. Well, you don’t have to make sequel after sequel after sequel. You can have a hiatus. So, you’re going to see some new IP from us, you’re going to see some old IP from us. I’m not going to put a date on it. Sooner rather than later. You’re not going to be waiting a looong time, but I’m not going to put a time on it.”

In addition to knowing that half of Rare is working on projects, now we know that their future endeavors involve both new and old IP. Excellent. Bring on Anticipation 2: Revenge of Yellow Shirt Guy.

They said that about Banjo.;)

Maybe something like Monkey Island? An interactive story, with some action/adventure type scenes mixed in?

It’s a ‘genre’ that’s been dead for a while. Rare attempting something along those lines would be very interesting. And something like that would be an ideal game to work with a ‘wand’ type controller, too.

I’ve always felt that would be the case for banjo that the “hardcore fans” would hate it if it was any other way even if the same as the first two
