New Rare game to be announced next week?

Keep your expectations low for the recently revived Killer Instinct 3

The original story of this news isn’t actually all about Rare, as it focuses a major announcement by Bungie purportedly scheduled for next week. Apparently, an unknown source referred only as an industry insider informed website GAMER.tm that Microsoft has plans to unveil Bungie’s next hit in a few days. Judging by the way it looks, this follows the typical gossip scheme of ‘somebody told me that someone told them’ and probably shouldn’t be taken too seriously. However, the same source also mentioned the possibility of Rare announcing a new game as well at the same mysterious event. So here we are to comment on it.

While the most optimistic fanboys are surely fantasizing about Killer Instinct 3 already, there is actually little chance that this game, or any other new Rare game, will be presented in the upcoming weeks. GAMER.tm was unable to offer any details on either Bungie’s or Rare’s soon-to-be-made announcements, which only undermines its credibility. Rare had one hell of a year with two Viva Piñata games released so far and a new Xbox dashboard on its way, plus Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie coming to the Xbox Live Arcade to complement Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts’ release for the 360 in November. Why would they want to outshine their most anticipated title just a month and a half before its release by announcing a brand-new game? Wouldn’t it make more sense to wait until next spring, as usual, to start teasing around with new titles?

Not only do videogame publishers hold their official announcements until dates on and around the three-month period between March and May, they rarely give preference to new products a year before their potential release when there is newly unveiled stuff waiting to be released, or recently released stuff still resting on the stores’ top shelves. Unfortunately, Rare’s current situation involves both scenarios.

On the upside, note that even if nothing happens next week, this doesn’t necessarily deny the existence of Killer Instinct 3. As for Bungie’s next game, just as GAMER.tm pointed out, we can’t really tell if it will be unveiled soon or whether it will be Halo 4 or anything related to the Halo franchise. Although knowing the previous Halo games, we couldn’t care less anyway.

Would be nice… but it’s doubtful.

Could it be the game the former Kameo/Starfox Adventures programmer is working on? Two, recent quotes from him:

“I’m not going to put a date on it. Sooner rather than later. You’re not going to be waiting a looong time, but I’m not going to put a time on it.”

“There’s about half the studio missing from the release schedule at the moment (laughs). You’ll be hearing soon enough, which is what I can’t say really. It’s not going to be too long.”

The top one specifically refers to the game he’s working on, whilst the bottom one could be making reference to any number of titles in development.

A Kameo sequel would be nice, but I’m thinking we’re in for something that doesn’t fall into the traditional genres Rare dabbles in, much like Viva Pinata and Nuts and Bolts. Maybe even a music creation ‘game’? Rock Band and Guitar Hero are more videogames with music and instrument peripherals used as imput devices. Wii Music generates random sounds that fit the beat of the music, so not really a videogame, nor a music creation program.

But something entirely different is more likely. An interactive storybook, with action scenes? Now that would be cool.

Maybe a Kameo 2 or a Perfect Dark 2. I hope one of them.
