Sheet music to Killer Instinct 3 makes the internet rounds

Proof towards existence of the title?

Ah, Killer Instinct 3. For years, fans have clamored for the title. With every mention of it, our hopes rise, only for Loveday to continually shoot them down. As mentioned in the past, it’s Rare’s unintended version of the boy who cried wolf. Teasing as recent as Rare’s Christmas card plus the tour of Rare earlier this year with “Death! Destruction! Doom!” has only fueled the desire. What you’re about to see might not help things any more.

Recently, MundoRare was contacted by someone at Microsoft (whose privacy will be protected) and sent us this. Click on it for the full resolution.

As you can see at the very top, it’s labeled “Killer Instinct 3 -Main Title-” as it then goes into notes. Despite the first reaction in your heads being “Oh, here we go, Rare’s teasing us again”, there might be some form of legitimacy to this. A few months ago, EGM’s Quartermann reported rumblings of a Killer Instinct 3. Not only that, but Nick Burton slyly hinted on Rare’s future offerings possibly being both new and old IP.

Regardless, if the game is actually in development right now, what we’re going through at the moment is a hell of a pre-release promotion. MR will keep you updated as news breaks. In the meanwhile, musicians, why not play this yourself and confirm whether or not it actually sounds like KI, or if it’s music-speak for “You’re not ever getting this game?” Bonus points if you upload it on YouTube and you don’t sound crap.

I’ll have to upload a sound clip onto youtube this week..Maybe.

At any rate, the rhythm on bars 1-22 seems a little off, and too slow. It’s looks like it’s written for an electric, distorted guitar due the staccatos on bar 1.

The lead lick from bars 24-29 is VERY KI-esque. With a little bit of polish, this track could indeed be the intro for KI3, as most of the music matches the overall theme of the KI theme from the arcades back in the day.

You know, The Killer Instinct games never got me that excited. Sure, the combo system was refreshing, but aside from that it wasn’t anything special and characters were dull as h*ll.

I’d much rather see a new Perfect Dark see the light of day instead of this.

ULTRAAAA COMBOOOOOOO.

sorry perfect dark had nothing on the original arcade ver of KI!!

and the SNES port was near seamless for the time.

Thanks to your sheet I was avaible to transcribe it. I’m not sure if it’s 100% accurate but I hope so.

Hey guys. I transcribed what is most likely the violin part and made a synth mockup of it.

Based on that violin line though, I extrapolated on what the final thing will probably sound like. That line implies a very typical “epic” chord progression that is used, so I filled it out.

Good job on trumping my work… Just joking, you’ve done very good, and the full theme seems plausible. Not sure if it’s supposed to play like that, since I’ve never really played Killer Instinct, but it really sounds great.

Hey, very neat work everybody!

As a ‘reward’ we’ll soon revamp our KI section with its full soundtrack ;)

Great work on the guitar stuff. I added combined his guitar track with my orchestral track for ultimate epicness!

Be sure to let the guitar guy know in case he wants to hear it :)

Hahaha, that’s great Chris Allen. Funny stuff. This is almost becoming a small meme amongst music dorks.

Holy shit, Chris Tilton. That’s very good. But the theme is a bit cheesy for my taste. That chord progression is getting a bit.. over-used.

Comment by Erik Schröder — 05.Sep.08 @ 7:43 pm

Look at the table of the first picture on this page: http://www.music4games.net/Features_Display.aspx?id=284

It’s the same type of table. :)

“Holy shit, Chris Tilton. That’s very good. But the theme is a bit cheesy for my taste. That chord progression is getting a bit.. over-used.”

Yes, that is the point! Of course it is over used, and the sheet music implicitly implies that progression. The theme is absolutely ridiculous! It’s Hans Zimmer style cheese all the way, but then, so is Killer Instinct.

And you are right about the table. It’s the same one!! So, they must have recorded it, either for a real game, or just for fun.

Um… we’ve made dance mixes of your song more. Can’t help it, it’s pretty damn good. Enjoy~!

I don’t see why it wouldn’t just have a remix of the classic KI theme. This is obviously fake.

“I don’t see why it wouldn’t just have a remix of the classic KI theme. This is obviously fake.”

You know, maybe they have the classic theme come in later on. The classic theme could also be playing along with it.

Personally, I dunno if this is gonna be the actual main theme. I’m not saying it’s fake, but it could be a rough draft or something. If KI 3 did come out, I would much prefer it had the classic theme over the “new” theme.

I used to work at rare (In fact I worked on KI Gold an an early ver of Ki3) and I can say that with a high degree of certainty that….

A) You’re stupid if you believe this is true. Let us establish this first as its the for everything else:)

B) There is no table or floor like that in rare as its mostly a very uniformed building.

C) A KI theme tune will have the KI Motif running though this, stop giving some nerd on the internet a hardon by thinking his stuff is actually good enough to be palmed off.

I did some work on KI3 many years ago, I think 1999, it only went on for a few months then we got broken up and put on other things.
So that is perhaps the biggest indication that it might be possible to see a sequel to KI3, but Rare were still on good terms with Nintendo then.

KI as a game mostly relied on its great looks and combo system.

The problem they have is a lot of what made KI a good game is simply common ground now, they would struggle to make a good fighting game now because as an actual game it was NOT the best playing game out there and not as deep as Street Fighter 2, but as I said equally as fun for different reasons.

I agree KI3 would be good in theory, but it could easily turn out to be a huge disaster because the fighting game market has been exhausted in terms of graphics/gameplay and the bar has been raised to so high and I’m not sure they’re the same company as before, times have changed for better and for worse.

Is your ex-employee status due to your mild failure at grammatical perfection? I can see how that could get irksome on official reports and such.

Anyway, I’ve never really understood the rabid fascination with KI3. Like the esteemed wordsmith above noted, most of the series’ unique points (ie. superior graphics and a fancy combo system) have become negligible primarily thanks to Moore’s law. The only thing the series has that can’t be found elsewhere is its unique characters, mythology and aesthetic.

That said, I think it would be interesting to revive the series with forays into some other genre. An action-adventure is what immediately springs to mind (If I recall, Soul Calibur tried that and got mediocre results. That, however, would just be Sturgeon’s law in action, not necessarily a condemnation of the whole concept.) though I’m sure Spinal and Fulgore would be up for a round of tennis, some board games, and possibly some elaborate tea-and-crumpets based puzzle match.

Mind you, I’m not exactly in a position to be directing those sorts of choices, as I’m roughly one ocean and twenty years of education and career experience from a cushy office space in Twycross.

No, it was due to a bleary eyed reply in the dark at 5 to 12 on a cramped Eepc and knowing that perfect grammar/typos are nothing without good content.
