Dinosaur Planet originally was Diddy Kong Racing 2

Remembering the Fifth of November with Scribes

Quite a lot has happened since the Scribes of May was posted. Nuts & Bolts was revealed with its drastic game style. Trouble in Paradise was announced. Killer Instinct 3 is once again rumored with substantial evidence. BK and BT XBLA were announced, and the truth about Goldeneye XBLA was revealed by us, to name the most prominent examples. Despite this, Loveday filtered out most of the outdated letters to bring us a new edition of Scribes. It may not have entirely revealing anecdotes to Rare’s recent games, but rather to some of the classics. Let’s go on a chronological revelation journey, in my most missed form: list form!

  • When asked for a sequel to Banjo-Pilot, an original member had only “no” to say. While not a horrible game, it’s quite the odd request, personally speaking.
  • There’s nothing official to say about any future DS projects, but Loveday does mention that any future games on the platform would be “big brand spin-offs,” which are “more likely than all-new properties, the DS market being so vast that the extra push of recognisable IP is often needed to help a title stand out.”
  • Regarding Killer Instinct 3, Loveday as usual denies us a straight answer, only stating that this recent rumor is more mainstream than the others.
  • Currently there are no plans for a Nuts & Bolts soundtrack, but MP3s will be on Rare’s site “soon” (meaning probably this time next year). On a similar spectrum, don’t expect a Nuts & Bolts Collector’s Edition. The latter being quite obvious, as we would’ve no doubt seen it by now.
  • There are also no plans to bring back Conker Live & Reloaded and Ghoulies to Xbox Originals, and the chances are even lower considering the slow possible death that we’ve learned it might get.
  • One of the more interesting answers in this edition stems from the question of whether or not the text at the end of Kazooie implying Banjo-Tooie has been changed, and “judging from the text screens [Loveday’s] seen,” that seems to be the case. Whether this means that Kazooie will connect to Tooie as originally intended isn’t mentioned, it’s probably best to not get your hopes up.
  • Not exactly heavy-duty information, but apparently there was a bit of dialogue about tossing from the Jinjo Hurling game that isn’t in the final version, for obvious reasons.
  • A blast from the past: Diddy Kong Racing had two characters early on that were scrapped; according to Loveday, one was “a pantomime horse and the other was a baby mammoth.”
  • Yet another blast in the same question and answer: Dinosaur Planet was originally intended to be a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, and “it even had Wizpig in it again.” If this doesn’t scream “that’s what the “To Be Continued” at the end of DKR possibly meant,” then nothing will. Rather tragic that we got SFA instead.

Diddy Kong Racing characters

  • Just like KI3, Perfect Dark Zero DLC requests seem to be the norm in these very scarce Scribes editions. When asked regarding Counter-Op, Duncan Botwood answered that, surprise surprise, “the project has long since been wrapped up, and we have no plans to add any more content to Perfect Dark Zero.” Sadly, this probably won’t stop the continuation of more PDZ (or Kameo) DLC questions.
  • Cheato is confirmed to be in Nuts & Bolts and more than a homage in Banjoland. Super!
  • Last but definitely not least, there are no plans at the moment to release Banjo-Kazooie or Tooie on the Virtual Console. Just as well, Rare; ransom your games on Nintendo’s digital system until GoldenEye 007 is released for both Microsoft and Nintendo’s virtual service… oh, who am I kidding.

For references to Heroes, Bioshock, and a shout-out to Brother Mike, be sure to read the latest edition of Scribes in its entirety. Who knows how long the next one will take?
