Fans bet on Killer Instinct 3 for 2009

Will the fighting game become a reality this year?

In our latest poll, we asked if you people think that a new Killer Instinct game is already in development. Rumours about a third instalment in the series have been circulating ever since Microsoft bought Rare itself. A new chapter in this story was open when the mysterious picture of a music sheet hit the Net a few months ago. Although labelled as the third Killer Instinct’s main theme, its contents didn’t match the music that has been used in every game of the saga since its creation. That circumstance, along with the fact that a written soundtrack would suggest an almost finished game, reduced the chances of that picture being real.

However, not everybody seems to have thought about all those details, as the majority of voters definitely believe that Rare’s next game will be Killer Instinct 3. And not only that, they also think it will be released as soon as this year.

Do you think a new Killer Instinct game is in the works?

  • Yeah, why would they compose a theme otherwise? That game’s coming to the 360 on 2009. (214 votes) – 51%
  • They are probably making it for the arcade first, and the Xbox later. (61 votes) – 15%
  • Nah, Gregg Mayles denied it. Ain’t gonna happen. (62 votes) – 15%
  • I don’t really care. It’s highly unlikely that Rare will make anything better than Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive. (79 votes) – 19%

Kim Wu vs. Maya

As usual, we asked Rare what their thoughts are on this, but most developers were busy buying Christmas presents at the time. Therefore, the always-altruistic George Kelion decided to share his opinion with us, not to much help: “I couldn’t possibly comment any future plans we may or may not have for Killer Instinct, as I wouldn’t want to give anybody an excuse to stick me in a mo-cap suit and put me on the receiving end of a motion-captured 99 hit combo!”

So was that music sheet on a table a fake? Probably. Is a third Killer Instinct game coming sometime? Most likely. Will that time be soon enough? We can’t possibly know, but it sounds unlikely for now.

Concerning the music: the “third” theme sounds absolutely awesome! BTW. you write that every other Killer Instinct uses the same KI theme. That’s not true: the original arcade cabinet only had a very short guitar riff as the music without any melody at all to it. The theme itself was only in KI2 and the music was simply re-used for the N64 home version “KI Gold”.
The only thing the new music has lacking is that guitar riff in the background, put the riff at the beginning/ending and that new tune sounds *sooo* much like Killer Instict music.
It wouldn’t be featured on the sheet music anyway, so that doesn’t discredit the sheet for me.

I also was in the camp of “we’re getting a new Killer Instinct” but thinking a little bit more about it, it became clear to me that Rare didn’t tease us any more about it lately than they have always done. Heck, there are teasers of KI in PDZ and Kameo …and in Ghoulies …and in Conker…
Now I’m really skeptical. Going up against the new Tekken would be a monumental task.

It would be a shame if the theme is a fake, it is pretty good indeed

It’s definatly coming out 2009 on xbox360 or 2010 on xbox720.

Seriously, “Yeah, why would they compose a theme otherwise?”. That theme isn’t really complicated. :P It is surely just a false hint, it probably didn’t take very long at all to compose it. I should know, I’m a composer. But hey, I might be mistaken.

Can you guys put together another killer instinct poll?. Only this time asking how many of us would actually buy the game. If not KI3 then KI1 & KI2 on XBLA. The result would be far more useful to Rare.

I think it would be such a huge waste not to revive this great fighter…there are not many people who doesn’t or at some point love KI there are some but they pale in comparison to us who do..I definitely think a new one is in the works how can they ignore us for all these years this is what they do make games and if the ones (us) who make them rich says they want a certain product they would be fools not to so..fake music or not something is definitely going on..and I don’t think that Killer Instinct will have trouble competing AT ALL this game is one of the best by far KI is in a league of its own unique..and done right(staying tru to its feel and aura and all the things that made KI soo badass but still some how of today)man KI is going to kill! Im sure it will do exceptionally well everything about this game was fly the music & sounds the graphics the play the characters Tekken,StreetFighter man KI had what they have..even way back then..thats not a worry. if it was great with the limitation of the past technology it was created with just imagine what can be done now. man.. KI forever!
