Rare denies Blast Corps 2 and Jet Force Gemini 2 yet again
Klungo-riffic wallpapers await you at Rare’s site
With E3 fast approaching, and the last edition of Scribes being somewhere around mid-February, good ol’ Loveday saw it fit to update with yet another tantalizingly teasing edition of Scribes. There’s quite a bit to talk about this time around in the form that’s become synonymous with Scribes-related articles; without further ado:
- As 4J Studios told MundoRare, Bottles’ Revenge was a casualty of Tooie back in 2000, and things this time around were no different, on account of the fact that Devil Bottles mode “was never completed and online play was obviously never even started.” On a Stop ‘N’ Swop-related note, Rare finally admitted that the “self-contained approximation” found in the original game was what Stop ‘N’ Swop ultimately rewarded, as we saw (for the most part) in Tooie XBLA.
- When asked about what a Banjo-Fourie would have, Loveday, besides commenting on the horribleness of the name, said that he doesn’t know any more than you do on a possible sequel. Keep in mind that, before the game’s release, the team originally wanted to build upon (sorry) the vehicle concept. Who knows what the plans are now, if any?
- Loveday, in a rather creative manner, acknowledges, once again, the lack of a Blast Corps and a Jet Force Gemini sequel. However, he does wonder if XBLA would “be a good place to reintroduce the whimsical savagery of the originals first.” In which case, yes, it would. Bring on the difficulty of Blast Corps and the painfully long Tribal fetch-quest in Jet Force Gemini to a new audience!

- It seems that in this day and age, an edition of Scribes can’t go by without denying Killer Instinct 3. Again. As usual, “KI3 is not an impossibility, but we’ve got nothing to tell you right now.”
- While the economic recession has been quite the bitch, it can safely be said that it didn’t result “in the canning of entire projects.”
- On a similar note, when a few of Rare’s staff were unfortunately compromised, an employee let slip of four projects. Loveday commented, “I don’t know where and when this confirmation happened, but it must have passed me by. The actual situation here is that things are so TEH TOP SECRAT at the moment, I’m a loooong way from being in a position to spill the beans on everything that’s cooking. What I will say is that there’s little talk of the ‘obvious choices’ I’ve seen rumoured elsewhere.” This begs the question if he considers KI3 an obvious choice, but as it stands, we hopefully won’t have long to find out what Rare’s been cooking.
-
Loveday takes a stance on the moderate successes of their games on the 360 versus what fans want from Rare: “We won’t argue the case of our games making the same splash with the ‘traditional’ fanbase as they did at the peak of our success to date, but that’s down to a number of factors rather than a simple, blasé claim of Rare going down the toilet. With Banjo in particular, if Nuts & Bolts wasn’t for you, that’s fine, but it is still a Banjo game. Our reasons for the gameplay shift are well-documented, and it remains part of the Banjo franchise, designed and built by the same core team. The fact that you would have preferred a straight-up platformer doesn’t change that.”
“We know where you’re coming from, and we’re not blind to the fact that the old-school fanbase isn’t necessarily getting all it wants from us right now (in as much as the fanbase has a consensus opinion, which historically it never has). We do listen to feedback, and we are aware of decisions made that have and haven’t been appreciated. But like any other company, Rare has to do what’s necessary to stay on the map at any given time.”
While it’ll never stop the fanboy bitching, it’s still nice to hear another perspective.
- Even though Rare has stopped development on DS titles at the moment, we’ll apparently see what’ll happen with that sooner or later in terms of permanence.
- As documented by GamesTM, Diddy Kong Racing didn’t start as RC Pro-Am, but it went through that stage.
- Last but not least, despite being a popular rumor, Timber 64 never existed, according to DKR’s team leader.
That seems to be everything important from this edition. To check the entirety of this edition, as well as someone getting what’s possibly the first Conker tattoo, Rare’s site is the place to go. Don’t forget to check out the Nuts & Bolts artwork section, where you can get wallpaper from two of Rare’s greatest games-within-a-game to hit this century.

Or maybe, we could, you know, give Rare some creative freedom so they can come up with some new franchises?
Comment by BanjoBoy123 — 20.May.09 @ 11:52 pmYeah I’d like to see sequels to their earlier franchises but I’d also want some new ones from Rare either would be fine, I just want to see what games do they have up their sleeves right now.
P.S. for all those who believe the next Banjo to be threeie notice how they mention fourie here.
I was a big fan of their games, once. The great days of Rare are over.
Comment by Verdien geld — 21.May.09 @ 10:32 amwhile a sequel to all the great franchises would make me a happy man, you have to remember this is Rare, not capcom. By that i mean Rare will not milk a franchaise dry. Lets see great games with lots of creativity and fun whether it has jet force gemini on the front or not!!

T.T
I really enjoyed Nuts and Bolts. I do wish it was a spin-off of the Banjo series more or a whole new IP instead but I can take it that Nuts and Bolts is Banjo Threeie. I just hope if there ever is another Banjo game it will go back to the old ways. Not to say the new ways are bad I just liked the old way more.
As for what Rare is doing next I want to see a new BattleToads or a new Perfect Dark next. May be even a new Wizards and Warriors too. But if it is any thing like Rare’s past games I will buy it.
Comment by Joe — 22.May.09 @ 6:31 amThe concept behind Nuts and Bolts was a great one, I thought, but the game failed to deliver. I’ve reached the final battle (earned 78 or so jigsaw pieces) and I’ve encountered VERY few interesting, fun tasks. They were all identical, save for a couple of changes, and mired by a horrendous camera and sloppy physics. I just didn’t enjoy the majority of them.
The vehicle builder/editor is a joy, though. Wonderful. But nothing really inspired me to go to the garage and build something. And when I did, the vehicle I’d built did not do what I intended it to do.
So I’m not optimistic about a Nuts and Bolts sequel – they’d likely make the same mistakes again. But it had so much potential.
