“Something different” and “for the masses” for Killer Instinct 3

Natal’s lack of a “conventional controller” may bring it back

Oh, Killer Instinct 3. More than ever, we’ve been teased about your existence. Whether it was the sheet heard years ago, or Gregg Mayles’ comment about KI3 needing to be a “revolution,” the series is certainly something that Rare love to talk about. The latest word recently came from GamesTM, with its latest issue focusing on Rare.

Mark Betteridge, head of Rare, had this to say about a possible Killer Instinct 3: “It’s about timing, and it’s about the opportunity creatively and gameplay-wise that it would offer. Street Fighter IV looked great and they’ve done a great job, and I’m a big fan of those products, but with KI we want to do something different rather than go back into that arena.” Furthermore, he adds: “I think it’s about doing something different than with a conventional controller.”

There are also further quotes from GamesTM’s latest issue regarding Natal (and possibly KI3), which features Rare’s desire for the future, thanks to Rare Witch Project posting the scans: “When we saw the blank piece of paper that Natal can be, we were immediately drawn to offering something brand new and not trying to think how we could replicate anything that’s been done previously.” He continued “that doesn’t necessarily mean that the door is completely closed for recognisable IP, but if we did revisit an existing series it would obviously have to be something that would work fantastically with Natal.”

Kim Wu vs. Maya

George Andreas, head of Rare’s design, adds that the challenge in making a KI3 is, indeed, making the game “for the masses.” The magazine concludes that “fans will have to wait until Natal hits the market before they discover if that question is to remain unanswered.”

It should go without saying that we wish Rare luck in finding opportunities to make Killer Instinct 3 accessible without alienating their fans. Goodness knows it would be nice to not only have KI3 exist, but not hearing about any more canceled titles for a while.
