A Rare Natal game “may be” released in October 2010

Natal confirmed for a release this Fall, maybe with 3D technology

Things have been quiet lately regarding Rare development. With nothing more than the not very recent Xmas Greeting (which featured some tidbits of what they may be working on), the company is keeping a low profile while 4J Studios focuses on the remake of some of their past glories (which has been proved to be a very lucrative decision, anyway). But with the release of Natal late this year, this silence shouldn’t last much longer, since all their titles are based on this new technology.

In fact, a Microsoft executive has just ‘accidentally’ jumped the gun announcing on the Saudi Arabian television that they plan to release Natal as soon as this October, so that may be the date for at least one of those games in development. And Rare themselves have just acknowledged via their Twitter channel that they “may release a game this year.” To be fair, we’d be quite disappointed if they don’t have at least one release title.

Hints from Rare's 2009 Xmas Greeting

On a related note, which may or may not have anything to do with those Rare games for Natal, South Korean TV manufacturer LG has just confirmed a deal with Microsoft to release their new “LX5900 3D TV alongside Xbox 360 3D game bundles,” according to TechRadar. Hopefully this will mean something more than just a Wii Fit 3D on Xbox.

Looking at the image, the tiny cars would either suggest an R.C. Pro Am, or Blast Corps.

I’m not sure how Blast Corps would work with Natal’s camera – I think it’s probably a game more suited to the controller. Pro Am, on the other hand…

It has been stated often enough that Rare is not working on any known franchises. The games will be something completely new. I fear they might just be some sports mini-games using the avatars… :(

well unfortunately i agree with you. but like i believe summer might have actually said this.. someone on here did, but they said no “old” ips, banjo might get some sequel love because it is an “active” ip… so weather u like/liked banjo at all, its probably our only hope for a classic title

Aye, that’s right. Where this comes from is the question that Developer Online put to Rare’s chief:

Developer Online: Obviously Rare has a legacy of famous games but, now that the company is moving in new directions, is there a need to go back to them?

Rare: There isn’t a need to, I mean, it’d be nice to go back to these projects that have been successful in the past – but that doesn’t mean we will. We’d only go back to older franchises if we saw an opportunity to make the product in a different way that would do justice to that, not just for the sake of it.

The question made a point of asking is there an absolute “need to” return to their established stuff in order to be successful in the future. Rare’s response is that it’s not neccessary – Rare can be successful without propping itself up with old IP.

So I find it a positive thing, really. They have the freedom to risk new ideas and IP, without writing out their old characters/IP.

I am not too enthused at the prospect of a Wii Sports knock-off, either, but a mix of more traditional ‘gamer games’ and what Nintendo calls ‘expanded audience games’ I’d be fine with. :)

No Summersky, that’s not the only source where this comes from.
There were other interviews where Rare stated explicidly that they are *not* working on known franchises. Have no links handy though.

Y’know, I keep thinking “Rare’s new titles are going to be crappy sports games,” but think about it guys, we know Rare, Rare is amazing. I can guarantee that we’ll ALL be pleasantly surprised once E3 rolls around.
