GoldenEye 007 and Donkey Kong Country Returns revealed

Meanwhile, Rare fans have... Kinect Sports

Nintendo’s press conference is over, and, while Rare wasn’t mentioned, follow-ups to Rare’s beloved titles were announced.

First off, GoldenEye 007 was announced. What was a particular slap in the face was that when Reggie talked about the game and how successful it was, not once was Rare mentioned. The boxart for the original game was shown, but Rare was never directly referenced. It’s actually quite sad, given that a GoldenEye game can be released, but Microsoft can’t do anything to stop it, or even negotiate to release GoldenEye on XBLA.

In the biggest surprise yet, Donkey Kong Country returns in… Donkey Kong Country Returns. Retro’s taking the franchise that Rare established and bringing it back to the Wii. Donkey and Diddy Kong are teaming up again to rescue their Banana Hoard from the new Tiki thread. Nearly everything that a DKC fan can ask for is in this game: Barrel Cannons, Mine Carts, Kong Letters, a better form of Co-op play… it’s, as Nintendo says, a “New Country for Old Friends.”

Naturally, DKC’s biggest fans are loving what they’ve been seeing, but again, it’s a bit sad to know that Rare’s working on their recent project(s) and not this game. Then again, the closest we ever got to them working on DKC4 is a quote in Scribes saying that they’d love to, but that it was Nintendo’s decision to make. Nintendo, as it seems, didn’t want to choose them.

I actually think the biggest slap in the face is the fact they’ve pretty much completely changed the game. All the levels are different, it’s a different bond, they’ve added regenerative health (which will change multiplayer completely) and they’ve even changed the story!

In short Do. Not. Want.

Give me the XBLA true remake or nada.

As long as they didn’t stray away TOO from the old games and Cranky is bitter again I’n sold. These new “tiki” enemies as opposed to Kremlings however is step back.

Comment by Hamilton — 16.Jun.10 @ 4:59 am

@Matt: Never gonna happen so take what you have and quit whining.

Comment by Hudson — 16.Jun.10 @ 5:01 am

That is true Hudson, but what happens if our expectations get too high and we just get another King of Swing/Jungle Climber? I say if this game doesn’t work out, Rare out to aquire the rights to Donkey Kong once more. However after seeing Kinect Sports I’m worried what would happen.

Comment by Hamilton — 16.Jun.10 @ 5:06 am

Well you never know. The Kremlings could form a temporary partnership with the Kongs to stop the tiki invasion.

Comment by Hudson — 16.Jun.10 @ 6:12 am

And besides he was talking about Goldeneye.

Comment by Hudson — 16.Jun.10 @ 6:20 am

This new Donkey Kong game looks cutesy. The DKC trilogy was not cutesy, and the Kremling enemies looked badass. So I will not be buying the new one.

Comment by Jim — 16.Jun.10 @ 7:20 am

That new DKC game looks horrible. The animals look like they come from DK Jungle Beat and not from DKC.

I won’t say anything about Nintendo’s Goldeneye “re-imagination” as this drives me mad.

Comment by Sabreman — 16.Jun.10 @ 11:05 am

Rare was founded in 1982 died in 2010.

Comment by 1994 cain — 16.Jun.10 @ 1:51 pm

People .. Just because Rare didn’t make it doesn’t mean you have to bash it and say that it “sucks”….

This new Donkey Kong game looks cutesy. The DKC trilogy was not cutesy, and the Kremling enemies looked badass. So I will not be buying the new one… Like Jim Stfu

Comment by marko — 16.Jun.10 @ 3:47 pm

Well you obviously haven’t seen the lack of imagination used in Jungle Beat, King of Swing, and Jungle Climber. Of course our expectations are low.

Comment by Hudson — 16.Jun.10 @ 6:22 pm

Exactly. I might just get a rental to see how it was put together.

Comment by Hamilton — 16.Jun.10 @ 8:36 pm

I still can´t believe there is people complaining about this news, seriously.
DKCR looks amazing and the new Goldeneye seems interesting at the least. Can´t wait to play both.
Some guys whine too much. It’s all about having fun and enjoy the games.
I´m tired of “fans” complaining about everything these days.

Comment by al — 16.Jun.10 @ 8:39 pm

golden eye idk about, but while it is disappointing that nintendo basically said FU to rare with these sequels/remakes, i for one agree with al, at least to me, dkcr looks SICCKK

Comment by billy — 16.Jun.10 @ 11:46 pm

Neither are as much of a slap in the face but the fact the company has indeed moved on. Though I do miss what Rare put behind the helm and it’s not going to feel the same on either, I’m still impressed on what both companies are bringing to the table.

Unfortunately the business world isn’t going to make it all roses. Goldeneye was a nintendo game. I wouldn’t ever want it on an XBox ever no matter what price it was. I’m willing to give these a chance just as the new metroid. So when you get over the fact of what might be lost. The N64 game was good for what it was in the day. Give the new things a chance as it’ll also allow newer gamers to experience some of it with the times.

Comment by tshadowdrag — 17.Jun.10 @ 1:30 am

If I had a time machine I would travel 10 years in the future (2020) and if there is still no conker sequel then I’ll say ” I GIVE UP!!!”

Comment by 1994 cain — 17.Jun.10 @ 1:56 am

When Rare left nintendo nobody say nothing… I think is time to left the DKC Saga to another company, I don´t think the retro’s game is bad… obviusly Rare games rocks in the SNES but actualy… it appears to stay copying the nintendo ways…

First, the piñatas (pokemon), second the avatars (Miis), and now… kinect sports (Wii sports, wiifit and wii sports resort)…

I think Rare should produce more new titles…

Comment by Tredant — 17.Jun.10 @ 6:14 am

Lol. The new DKC and GoldenEye are great. You are just jealous because Rare is now a peace of crap.

Comment by Joe — 17.Jun.10 @ 6:53 am

@Joe: Us jealous of Nintendo? A company who owns a system that has it’s own line of hand me down party games? Bollocks sir! Just plain bollocks! None of us are jealous of anything. We’re just angry that Kinect Sports is all that Rare has to offer us while Nintendo is coming out with dozens of great games. Microsoft ruined Rare’s chance to produce some quality games this year because they had them working on Kinect Sports for 6 years. Rare is not crap dear boy. Microsoft is.

Comment by Hamilton — 17.Jun.10 @ 9:32 am

Oh and please excuse my cock up of mistaking the NES for the SNES.

Comment by Hamilton — 17.Jun.10 @ 9:47 am

Hamiltn ffs stop whining!

Shut up! Your so damn annoying.

Face it, Rare is doing NOTHING but Kinect or w.e its called.

Get over it already!

Comment by marko — 17.Jun.10 @ 5:48 pm

@Hamilton: “Rare is not crap dear boy. Microsoft is.”
I totally agree with that.

Now, about the DK thing, I understand your concerns with the last DK games (although i kind of liked Jungle Beat) But you´re forgetting a very important fact: DKCR is being made by RETRO, you know, who made the SUPER DUPER AWESOME Metroid Prime games. So yeah, you shouldn’t be worried about this one. Yeah, maybe some details are not going to be the same, but trust me the quality is going to be there, no doubt.
Cheer up, my friend.

Comment by al — 17.Jun.10 @ 7:50 pm

Rare’s secretiveness is whats really killing them imo. if they could just see that no ones happy and give us even the SMALLEST hint that theyre working on something else, something better, now or in the near future, they wouldn’t be losing soooooo much support.

Comment by billy — 17.Jun.10 @ 9:09 pm

@marko: Me whine? Not once have I said “Rare sucks now! Rare is dead! Rare is crap!” Unlike you and other so-called Rare fans I’m actually keeping a positive attitude. Rare will return to their old roots after these hand-me-down Kinect games. The reason we haven’t been getting quality games is because they were working on Kinect games for 6 years. Now that they’ve reached the end-point, there is hope that they will get back to working on projects like Perfect Dark 2 and Kameo 2. I doubt if they’ll be working on a Conker sequel soon since Wankersoft hates him so much. That being said, if anyone’s doing the whining around here it’s all these people who are turning their backs on Rare because of a few minor setbacks. I’ll never lose hope in my favorite video game company.

Comment by Hamilton — 17.Jun.10 @ 9:56 pm

I hope you’re right al.

Comment by Hamilton — 17.Jun.10 @ 10:13 pm

I’m sure Rare have a lot more exciting stuff in development – stuff I bet they’re itching to show right now, but can’t due to Microsoft choosing to withhold them for a while.

It sounded to me like Rare’s development slate was wiped completely clean a short while back, so it’ll probably be a while before we see anything substantial. A Wii Sports-like game would be a simpler and quicker project to put together, surely, what with Wii Sports already being there as a template to build off. The controls are probably where they had to put in the most work, but they’re supposed to be natural motions, so I’d guess it’s something they’ve just been fine-tuning to make it as realistic as possible, as the hardware itself was improved with each new iteration.

And what about the new studio in Birmingham? We don’t know what’s to come out of that yet.

DKC Returns looks absolutely stunning. Glad Retro’s on the job, because the quality and imagination in the Prime games was second to none.

Comment by SummerSky — 20.Jun.10 @ 4:45 am

I’ve never played the Metroid Prime games, but if they are as great as you say then *sigh* I suppose I could keep a more positive attitude towards DKCR. I’m just worried.

@1994 cain: Rare died in 2002, when Stamper brothers sold their 51% interest in Rare to Microsoft.

Comment by Francesc — 20.Jun.10 @ 11:35 am

Big mistake Tim and Chris.

Comment by Hamilton — 21.Jun.10 @ 5:07 am

@Hamilton: Your right it was a mistake for Chris and Tim to sell 51% interest to Microsoft.

Comment by 1994 cain — 21.Jun.10 @ 3:34 pm

MICROSOFT ABUSED RARE AND MICROSOFT MUST DIE!!!

Comment by 1994 cain — 22.Jun.10 @ 2:10 pm

@Hamilton: Do you think Microsoft should die?

The reason why I think Microsoft should die because I wanted conker not kinect.

Comment by 1994 cain — 22.Jun.10 @ 2:23 pm

I really want to see a new update right now and I want it to be about the canned titles!

Comment by 1994 cain — 23.Jun.10 @ 12:59 am

Microsoft just needs to stick with making software and leave game development to the big boys. Nintendo and Sony have been in the game developing department for years. Microsoft has only started this century and have had little success in the market. Microsoft’s incompetence is what’s negatively affecting Rare. So far the only thing Microsoft’s done that’s astounded me was make a brand new Xbox 360 with 99.9% of the problems with the old system fixed. When I get ready to buy it I’m certainly trading in the old one and I suggest everyone else who owns one does the same.

Comment by Hamilton — 23.Jun.10 @ 8:37 am

Cant we just wait till these two games come out? I will admit that DKC returns looks well done. Although I hear from the grapevine that David wise isnt doing the soundtrack.

Comment by darky — 23.Jun.10 @ 6:47 pm

Of course he isn’t. He’s neither with Rare or Nintendo anymore.

Comment by Hamilton — 23.Jun.10 @ 8:44 pm

I am well aware of that Hamilton. Now that I think of it….I wouldnt mind of a remake of DK64 for the Wii.

Comment by darky — 25.Jun.10 @ 4:36 pm

“I’ve never played the Metroid Prime games, but if they are as great as you say then *sigh* I suppose I could keep a more positive attitude towards DKCR. I’m just worried.”

You’ve got to play at least one. Metroid Prime Trilogy is out now, and has all three games, so you could give that a whirl. The first’s still my favourite – great level design, puzzles, bosses, ambient music, and SO much detail in the environments.

The reason I am happy to see DK with Retro is because they’ve polished all their games to a standard even Nintendo EAD would be proud of, and they’ve shown that they know how to bring an old series back in an imaginitive way that taps into nostalgia.

Rare will be back to producing full-on gamer games, I’m sure of it. At worst it’s just a phase – it’s the way the videogame industry is going at the moment. Just look at Nintendo – everyone thought they were slowly turning their backs on longtime gamers, but E3 2010 has shown that they’re back doing what they do best now.

Microsoft just want a piece of Nintendo’s pie for the moment.

Comment by SummerSky — 26.Jun.10 @ 4:58 am

This game is an insult and a joke to the past versions!

All the new ideas for the game are great but taking of Kin K Rool and the other creatures…!!?

Whats your fucking problem Nintendo!? Might as well dimiss Gannon and Bowser don’t you think?!

Then go on and lose all the credibility that you have acquirered all these years in a bet on originality and exotism!!

Thats…thats so insulting and frustrating!
