MundoRare Closes
2001 – 2010
Saying goodbye is never easy, especially after nearly a full decade of dedication and commitment. MundoRare opened its doors on January 19th, 2001 and it closes them down today. The decision to take this final step is a carefully thought-out one, although we make it under an atmosphere of mixed feelings.
We started our journey back when Rare was at the closing stages of its golden age as Nintendo 64’s mainstay, oddly struggling to release Conker’s Bad Fur Day in the European market due to Nintendo’s notorious lack of support. About a year after, both companies ended a long and fruitful exclusive partnership when Microsoft acquired Rare for $375 million. Even though this divided the fanbase, we continued to express our support for many years to come on the Xbox. For us, loyalty never had anything to do with logos: it was all about games.
Over this time, we constantly evolved from a minor Spanish-speaking site to a much bigger English portal. We offered exclusive interviews, hands-on impressions, videos on location and insider reports. We were the first ones in the world to inform about the infamous GoldenEye 007 adaptation that got cancelled on the Xbox Live Arcade. We were the only ones to tell the truth behind the Conker sequel that was never made and Sabreman Stampede’s fate. We repeatedly debunked rumours about future titles, like Killer Instinct 3, even before official sources commented on the subject.

However, keeping such rate of work soon proved to be too time-consuming. What we started as a hobby had become something else, and we decided that if we wanted to keep the website alive, we had to start getting something in return. So as Rare reached its 25th Anniversary this year, we felt that the site needed to grow again. But this time it had to help us grow professionally as well.
Wrong Turn
Early in May, we showed Rare our most ambitious project to date. We planned to film an hour long documentary about their 25 years of history, to be shot on location in England, presented in HD and ready to be distributed freely via Xbox Live and Internet.
The project was formally introduced through a briefing that included a fact sheet, script, interview guidelines, several resumes and a demo reel. The crew behind the movie consisted of none others but us, since we also happen to be a team of filmmaking and journalism graduates with very good knowledge of Rare’s history. And best of all, the project was going to be shot at zero cost, because we had access to all the equipment we needed through a variety of professional sources.

Unfortunately, some days ago, Rare’s PR department finally denied our permission to shoot arguing that the film wasn’t going to be “on message.”
Shutting down the website was an option we were already considering in case we couldn’t make the process of working on it worth the effort. Therefore, we designed a win-win deal that could have resulted in a wonderful project for us and a terrific treat for fans everywhere. Despite its ambitious scope, we felt it was an irresistible offer. In fact, we are still puzzled over their response. It was a risk-free operation to be carried away with all legal safety measures deemed necessary and full of good intentions. It simply makes no sense. It has changed our perception of Rare forever and leaves us with no other option but to end our support for them. Yet it wasn’t the only cause.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
During the last nine years, we have never criticized Rare without a good reason. Still, ever since Microsoft’s buyout, they have been receiving negative backlash in almost a constant basis. People turned their backs at Rare because they never really managed to deliver a hit like the ones of their Nintendo years. Still, their games were good enough and deserved more attention. The first and only time we wrote an openly negative review of one of their products was last month with Kinect Sports, which ironically was used as an argument to oppose our documentary idea at a time when negotiations where already going bad. Kinect Sports may have been Rare’s biggest artistic disappointment in years, but it’s far from being their only misstep.

At the time development focused on Kinect, projects like a third Perfect Dark were ruled out. Rare also spent an entire year working on GoldenEye 007 without even knowing if Microsoft was going to be able to release the game, which led to the cancellation of a finished product after wasting months of hard work.
Way before that, they debuted in Xbox with a minor title lacking the right audience, Grabbed by the Ghoulies. They adapted the controversial Conker late in the lifetime of the original Xbox, censoring some of its contents despite the alleged freedom that Microsoft’s ownership offered. Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were delayed an endless number of times, only to be transferred into the Xbox 360 in a hurry, which affected negatively the quality of both games. More recently, Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts changed drastically the formula of its predecessors, a turn of events that was not well received by everyone. Only Viva Piñata seems to endure unblemished, although it was followed by a sequel that felt more like an add-on than a truly independent game.
Many blame Microsoft for these situations, although Rare claims to take its own decisions with little to no interference by the suits at Redmond. We don’t know what’s worse. And even though we can believe Nuts & Bolts to be an honest try to re-imagine an old saga gone wrong, it is really hard to think that a blatant copy of a four-year-old Wii game is the best idea Rare could come up with when facing a device with so much potential as Kinect. Sadly, we see Kinect Sports not only as an uninspired response to Nintendo’s success, but also as a major turnabout that collides with the interests of our website. As a game targeted to casual players, its audience doesn’t include our readers or us. Naturally, if that’s the path Rare wants to follow from now on, we can’t go along with them.
Farewell
Despite the circumstances in which we leave, we will always remember MundoRare fondly. Over these nine years and a half, we made new friends and started partnerships that forged our professional future. We also met excellent people from Rare itself and we wish them the best in their lives. While we may disagree with Rare’s direction as a company at the moment, we still believe many talented artists work at their studios in England. We sincerely expect to see more great games coming from them in the future, released either as Rare titles or under the seal of any other developer.
Finally, we also wish to thank all our past collaborators, partner websites and readers that supported MundoRare for such a long time. We wrote each word, took each picture and edited each video for you.
Hasta la vista,
The MundoRare Team.

Love you guys! Visited your site weekly even when nothing in Rare world was going down! Thanks for being such strong proponents of Goldeneye 007 XBLA as well!
Comment by IOnEI Falcon — 25.Jul.10 @ 8:28 pmwow, this sucks, this website has felt like home to me for years… but ever since rare’s “changes” i felt their followers would lose hope.. i even posted a comment about this site following such a lame developer once. rare has definitely changed for the worse. it’s a terrible shame. screw you rare and microsoft. but thank YOU mundorare for all of your excellent work throughout the years. i will miss you
p.s. to all the people like hamilton out there, that believes rare is innocent, and it’s all microsoft’s fault… that there’s still hope… rare KILLED mundorare. there truely is no more hope. game over. zero lives.
Comment by billy — 25.Jul.10 @ 9:07 pmI never forget when you made a fake article about Conker’s delay and I wrote it as a news article on my own site, then you guys wrote me on my site’s chat it is Spanish fools day joke
It isn’t that funny that Conker was really delayed after that
I gave up Rare fan site years ago. I you guys are awesome how become so big! I liked this site all the time. Thanks for this 9 years!
Comment by TheNAkos — 25.Jul.10 @ 9:33 pmLooks like I was right all along. My favorite website killed by some fags who want’s to make a wii sports clone game. Hamilton was wrong. Mundorare thanks for the 9 years news you givin me. Your right to, Rare doesn’t pay attention to the fans. So were never gonna get KI3,PD2,CBFD2,Kameo2,JFG2,BC2,BK4. Rare is all into Kinect now such a shame to see my company grew into something else thank you so much mundorare for everything. We all wanted a Killer Instinct 3, A Conker Sequel, A Perfect Dark sequel. But Rare doesn’t wanna go back to the Old IP’s. What a shame
Comment by Pain — 25.Jul.10 @ 10:18 pmI think Rare is well aware of their fans. However, their fans are not enough to get a selling title. Their games are, indeed, “worse” than in the past. But their old game formulas are not what sell well these days.
You can’t make a profit off of a vocal minority of older fans with nostalgia goggles on too tight. if they made a sequel, it would get trashed as being a rehash, despite being what the fans want. Look at Nintendo! It was always dead last in console wars until it sold to casuals. Why? Because the games they made that the fans grew to love are not what sells anymore.
I loved older Rare games, but it’s over now. The video games we liked aren’t what’s profitable anymore, unless you have cheaper popular products to make up for it.
Comment by Sikaffy — 25.Jul.10 @ 11:38 pmgood ridance. Your rumors debunked countless of times, were shameless.
Mario64 -> Banjo
Mario Kart -> Diddy Kong
Wii Sports -> Kinect Sports
Lear your history, dumbasses… don’t make cheap excuses just because you guys don’t have the balls to keep supporting a fan site.
Comment by starfox — 26.Jul.10 @ 2:17 amThanks for the brilliant work over the years Mundo. Your articles truly got to the heart of what fans wanted.
I don’t blame you for ending it now. Rare has made their new direction very clear and have shown a complete disregard for it’s fans going so far as disabling comments on YouTube videos. You lasted longer than most fans and for that you deserve credit.
Rare/MS are fools for not accepting your docu proposal. I hope they one day regret it.
Comment by Grantley — 26.Jul.10 @ 2:19 amThanks for all the years.
I also think you guys made the right decision to end this project. Rare doesn`t deserve a lovely side like mundorare not anymore.
Take care.
Comment by timo — 26.Jul.10 @ 3:00 amThanks for all the hard work you’ve put in guys! This has been my only stop for Rare info for the last 6 or 7 years. Will miss it.
Rare’s loss is somebody else’s gain – guess you’ll be moving on to bigger and better things now.
Comment by SummerSky — 26.Jul.10 @ 3:07 amIt was pretty damn lame of Rare to reject the project that would have only given you the right kind of publicity. Though I wasn’t a regular visitor, I have a lot of respect for MundoRare and everything in your article was absolutely correct.
Rare’s fanbase is fizzling out fast, and they only have themselves to blame.
Comment by DragonBottles — 26.Jul.10 @ 3:14 amThanks for the many years of reporting everything Rare. It’s sad to see a fan site close:(
Comment by Crusher 36 — 26.Jul.10 @ 3:31 amThis is pretty unfortunate. Best of luck with whatever you do in the future, Xmooth
Comment by Arich Boss — 26.Jul.10 @ 4:12 amAnon, I think you are right. But I don’t think we kno if those games wouldn’t sell anymore. I mean, rare really hasn’t released any games to test that. I mean they had a good opportunity with a third banjo kazooie, they took a risk. It failed. Super Mario galaxy still sells, a proper banjo kazooie 3 could too.. I think Microsoft gave rare enough chances to make a great game, and each time they couldn’t follow through. Microsoft just made a smart business decision to start using rare as a resource. Mundorare, you seem to imply it was rates idea for kinect sports. I’d say that was the point Microsoft took over
Comment by Frmaster — 26.Jul.10 @ 4:36 amNOOO!!! :’(!!!!!!!
Comment by Marko — 26.Jul.10 @ 4:48 amMeh. Rare is still a pretty secretive company. Why would all of you just expect that they would let you come film everything? That’s your own fault. I know they invited Wozza(Rare-extreme.com) to Rare a few times before. And yes, they are working on 1 casual game. Big deal. It’s basically a fun tech demo, and I doubt it’s taking any time or resources away from other projects. Microsoft could have handed it to someone else like Krome, but maybe Rare just wanted to try something different. Guess who developed Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Party and Wii Relax? Nintendo. And it’s not like the entirety of Rare is working on Kinect Sports.
Comment by lol — 26.Jul.10 @ 6:42 amSeriously, way too much whining. You did a great job on the website, yes. But you expected Rare to bend over backwards for you in more ways than one. And now you are jumping ship. lol
Comment by Mr. Pants — 26.Jul.10 @ 6:48 amIt’s sad news, I really liked the site, but the decision to close makes sense: I don’t see many rare-lovers here.
Comment by Marek — 26.Jul.10 @ 8:43 amSad news. Thanks for the time, though. This site was always ace, especially when you consider that secretive as Rare was as a company fans had to deal with a lot of speculation and this site treated these whole rumour affairs in the best way.
But it’s kind of sad that there are bad feelings involved with the cancelled film project.
Comment by Sabreman — 26.Jul.10 @ 1:13 pmI never minded that Rare doesn’t communicate with fans, fans want different things and once you start talking to them they expect more and more, they expect to see their influence on future games. Fans don’t trust even top developers to make games their own way anymore.
Unfortunately Rare has taken a nasty direction with the ugly Wii Mii avatars, broken Kinect camera games and characterless new branding. There’s nothing classy about new Rare and I believe Microsoft’s to blame. They’ve torn apart and pushed away so many fine developers (most notably Oddworld Inhabitants) it’s difficult not to jump to the conclusion that they’ve done it again to Rare, trying to make them something they’re not.
I’ll always hope Rare breaks free of their Microsoft shackles to develop for SCEE. I look at Media Molecule and wish Rare was in such a position. But I fear they’ll continue to be dragged through Kinect shovelware hell and that’ll be the last we remember them for.
Comment by KinketyKink — 26.Jul.10 @ 1:57 pmthese guys wanted to end the portal, and it’s their fault really, no need for excuses like the canceled rare doc.
If you guys really did want to use that to add fuel your complaints, at least you should’ve got first confirmation from the suits letting you do the visit, instead of whining about all the lost prep on the project that was denied. It’s theirs company, not yours for making decisions.
Parting is such a sweet sorrow. I really am sorry that you blokes feel this way. I do agree Rare has changed for the worse at the present time. All we can do now is wait to see what they have planned after Kinect Sports. Despite constant attacks towards me I really enjoyed my time at Mundorare. More specifically your game reviews. They were always honest and agreeable. They just proved that only true fans can give honest reviews about games from their favorite company. Well, tallyho chums. Goodbye, Billy, Pain, and others. I hope someday you find some enlightenment from our favorite company if they provide it.
Comment by Hamilton — 26.Jul.10 @ 4:17 pmIt’s too bad you guys have to call it quits. There aren’t many Rare-based fansites out there.
I guess it’s for the best, though. Rare’s no longer that company that was known for their outstanding games that excelled in pretty much every category that defines a game.
Take care of yourselves.
Comment by Jurae818 — 26.Jul.10 @ 9:08 pmWow your closing the site just cause Rare didn’t let you film your dockumentary? lol
Comment by Bob — 26.Jul.10 @ 9:13 pm@Bob Not just because. They started create crappy games, so the site need content not related those games. They wanted to make something big as fans, for fans. But Rare doesn’t care about fans anymore, so fan site doesn’t need to exist for them.
Saludos.
Comment by Cuat — 26.Jul.10 @ 9:22 pmIts sad to see you leave, I followed your website for more than 5 years (inclusive cuando solo era en espanol). Good luck with your new projects!
Comment by Jorge Reyes — 26.Jul.10 @ 9:41 pmIt really does feel like the end, not just for mundo but for Rare as well.. If kinect sports and whatever else after it doesnt sell that could be it, look at ensemble. Thank you MundoRare you were truely great I felt at home here and respect your decision to close.
Comment by Harry — 26.Jul.10 @ 10:05 pmGodspeed to all of you!!!.
Comment by Joseph — 26.Jul.10 @ 10:14 pmShame for Rare, for me the company is dead and I’ve already lost not only that company but also Akklaim. They literally built my childhood and now I feel like if something from my heart is gone, a puzzle devoured by Microsoft and its f***ing way to show that it is the king of the world. I don’t hate Microsoft for that but I hate the company for how it killed, slaughtered and devoured the soul of Rare.
For those who had left (Kirkhope and the Stamper brothers for example) and probably for more who will left of how things aren’t getting as supposed to be.
Maybe the last hope is watching Rare’s masterpieces in the XBLA but nothing more. Everything else is screwed up, shame on Rare for its lack of inspiration, creativity and awesomness. With their soul devoured and their way to do things shattered for just… compete… for being just a slave.
You’re dead Rare, you’re so f***ing dead!!! *Sheds a tear*
Anyway, I wish you guys from MundoRare any luck for whatever you’ll do in the future. The ancient spirit of Rare will live on after all.
Comment by Necromagenvion — 26.Jul.10 @ 10:45 pmGood riddance
You were kidding your self to think you would be allowed to do a documentary
Your arrogance will always be remembered Alberto
Comment by Rare Fan — 27.Jul.10 @ 1:10 amFarewell to u 2 Hamilton it’s such a shame that it had to end like this.
Comment by Pain — 27.Jul.10 @ 1:28 amsee ya hammy
It’s sad to see you go. I really enjoyed this site and had been a regular visitor for the last few years. I hope whatever you guys move on to will treat you well. Take care and thanks for sticking with it as long as you have.

Comment by David Orlando — 27.Jul.10 @ 5:52 amYour site was definitely one of the better (if not, best) Rare sites on the web that I frequented (and was more coherent in English than Rare Extreme since the beginning). Your coverage on Sabreman Stampede and other projects that I never thought even existed or could possibly even be covered were always top notch.
I can see where you are going. The Rare we grew up with has changed a lot (so many of the old members/crew have left, to me, once Leigh Loveday leaves the company is literally some kind of zombie that just has the same name). Kinect Sports and the cancellation of so many titles literally seems like the final nail in the coffin. Plus you got other things to do now anyway and the fun of running a Rare news site is definitely done and gone for now.
At least Goldeneye and DKC Returns on the Wii are something to remember the company by in there golden moments.
Comment by Giro — 27.Jul.10 @ 3:09 pmLeigh Loveday’s been writing for GamesMaster magazine recently – a feature called ‘The Time Machine,’ where he picks a console from the past and details its history and stand-out games.
Makes me wonder if he’s looking to try different things after spending so much time with Rare.
Comment by SummerSky — 27.Jul.10 @ 5:40 pmWorst part is, this could have been the thing that made this mundorare team their career. And Rare just took that from them.
I personally am not a member of the site, or ever have been here. But being a long-time rare fan, I can totally see where you’re coming from.
I understand why the good people at rare decided to take their leave, they were tired of the bullshit. Right here, in the comments of this page I denounce Rare as my favorite developer of all time. I don’t believe they’ll ever come back around and give us something even remotely good, they’ve disappointed us 5 too many times.
Good Riddance, Rare.
Long live MundoRare.
To watch a game company that flourished, and were the greatest of their time, under the wing of Nintendo, reduced to bottom-feeding on said companys efforts in the most shameless of ways tears me up inside.
I watched E3 having high hopes for Rare. Expecting to see a new platformer, adventure game or something that would have been predicable and awesome not even ten years ago. What they showed made me wish I had just given up gaming years ago.
I’m disappointed. Sorely. The average idiot isn’t going to give a shit about kinect, and Rare’s product will be ignored not only by the masses, but by their now resentful fans.
Nintendo brought tears to my eyes with a new Donkey Kong country, and the 3ds drove me wild.
Like the above poster, they were my favourite developer for a long time. I loved Kameo and Nuts and Bolts just as much as the SNES and N64 games.
The company is dead. Imagination, talent and whimsy have no place in twycross anymore. They are Microsoft’s Nintendo Ripoff Dept.
Over and out.
Comment by Alan @ Persocom computers — 27.Jul.10 @ 10:30 pmI still think you’re being a bit quick to write them off. The only game we’ve seen from this newly ‘restructured’ Rare so far is Kinect Sports. Before that we had Viva Pinata and Nuts and Bolts, what, only 2 years ago?
The situation with MundoRare is a sad one, but I am not going to declare the developer dead because some of the company’s higher-ups have decided not to proceed with the plans to film at their studio.

Comment by cyberfan27 — 28.Jul.10 @ 2:05 amAdios RARE!
Comment by Victor Cortes — 28.Jul.10 @ 2:59 amNever visited your site before now (except once, when I think I read a CBFD article) and I feel like I’ve missed a cool party or something, but it’s very sad to see you closing, knowing something this big is dissapearing truly makes it sink in that the old Rare is well and truly dead. To be fair to that new game though, that is what Rare has always done, they take a game that’s 4~ Years old and improve upon it (e.g. Banjo Kazooie = Mario 64 clone but better) so this is nothing new, also they have always shown their fans no respect at all (even in their games, often taunting you and implying that you fail) but right now their standard appears at an all-time low, goodbye Rare and goodbye MondeRare.
High Treason
SEGA RULES!
i loved your site. really helpful and funny, whenever in spanish or in english, it was a great site. You’re totally right, rare was THE 3rd party game company you could love and trust, it was way better than sega (yes, even when they had consoles, they just weren’t that good). Rare was really great back in the good ol’ days with nintendo (90’s) but since microsoft bought it, it…. just suck balls!!! i have wii sports, and i know as a fact that it’ll kick kinect sports’ ass any time!! well, bottom line, farewell mundorare
the grass is always greener!
I got to your website through Screwattack.com
This is the first time I’ve seen this website but I did check out some of your older posts and articles. You seem like a really dedicated fanbase and it’s always nice to see such dedication and admiration for a company that once deserved that.
More than Microsoft and Rare themselves, I feel sorry for you guys for being disappointed at a company that brought us some really great games.
I have nothing against Microsoft but it’s clear that Rare’s fall began soon after Microsoft’s acquisition, a move that really sealed their fate.
While it may seem a little harsh to quit your support for Rare after their refusal to do the documentary I think the evidence speaks for itself, they haven’t been able to produce games that resemble their past in almost 6 years.
How the mighty have fallen.
Comment by Ohad — 28.Jul.10 @ 7:34 amI was going to write this in english, but who cares!
Simplemente…. GRACIAS
Comment by Diego — 28.Jul.10 @ 8:01 amJust wanna show you my support dudes. It’s hard to believe that a company that owes itself to its followers would close the doors to a project like yours. I guess it just shows how biased are corporations out there, and how bad they reacted to a negative though impartial review from you. Well, in the end all of this is at their loss. Wish you all very succesful careers whatever new path you choose to lead.
Comment by Juan Jose — 28.Jul.10 @ 8:09 amHate to say it, but Rare have been assholes ever since they were bought by Microsoft and fired anyone who wasn’t a soul-less prick…
Comment by WeAllLoveToast — 28.Jul.10 @ 9:43 amI don’t know why people doesn’t understand what is the problem with the rejection of the documentary. It was mean to be a big step in the site’s life. Articles not enough now days, videos neither. If a website want to improve it needs big content that show everywhere on the web (even on Xbox Live). They wanted to make it not as a fan site, but professionals. It was a big project with professional background. A project that make the whole thing worth.
I knew this years ago. Because I was a website owner, and I saw I go nowhere with it. I didn’t have source for anything, so I killed my website. It was logical step. If I had a chance to break out from my country language to English, then create a documentary about Rare with professional tools and background, and they reject me: I do the same. Nine years is a long time to be a fan of a company that starts to rot in that nine years. Yeah maybe this is the worst part: Rare started to become bad in those years when the internet and fansites become important in a company’s life. Bad luck.
If you remember guys, there was years when Rare started to treat fans! We had two community managers in this time! They gave us insider infos. Even my little shitty Hungarian site get infos from them! Rare started to be cool! Then something happened. They become silent again. Sometimes I still get emails from them, but nothing interesting, just commercial stuff. They don’t even care I am in their email list XD
Comment by TheNAkos — 28.Jul.10 @ 10:00 amWait… you’re upset about Kinect Sports only because it’s not a more substantial game? How about just enjoying it for what it is, without putting unreasonable expectations on Rare’s every move? As an MS development studio, Rare have been at the forefront of Kinect development – surely you can understand that working the kinks out of a brand new peripheral and control system must have taken up a lot of time?
To be honest, I’m not surprised Rare refused your interview plans, after reading that “review” (it’s not even out yet! Way to pre-judge!) filled with poisonous rhetoric about how you’d rather they’d not released anything at all! If I had been working with Rare on Kinect Sports for over a year, I wouldn’t want to be in the same room with you for an interview either.
Comment by CNash — 28.Jul.10 @ 12:39 pmA sad story. Perhaps Microsoft should rename Rare to something more suitable so we can leave all their marvellous achievements in the past and not have them muddied by crap like Kinect Sports.
Mucha Suerte!!!!

I get the message here, I really do. Believe me, I’m more than disappointed with Rare over the last few years. But come on. Your reasons for shutting down are congruent to a five year old not wanting to clean his room unless his parents promise him dessert.
I will more than absolutely be the first to admit Rare’s lackluster performance. Starfox Adventures was the start – and after that, Nintendo sold Rare to Microsoft, because Nintendo saw what was coming.
But I mean, come on. The way you describe this is, you guys wanted to do some documentary, Rare said no, and then you pretty much Ragequit. Again, Rare hasn’t been doing so hot since the transition, but one game, ONE Wii-sports knock-off and you say “Oh herpa derp, Rare’s becoming a casual game manufacturer now! That’s not what WE want, time to go!”
Honestly, grow up a bit. I’m not outright saying you should bring back the website – after reading this, especially not – but at least don’t go shutting down a website based on some shoddy assumption that a demonstration that just happened to be made by Rare is going to be their entire future catalog.
Comment by Namo — 29.Jul.10 @ 1:20 amAs a fellow University of Navarra student I am really dissapointed to see this site closing down. But to tell the truth, I am more dissapointed at Rare´s decisions in the past few years. I have given them the benefit of the doubt for some time now, believing that they were just going through a rough time, but their answer to your documentary proposal is embarrasingly ridiculous.
I won´t say to heck with them, since they are still a company that has the experience and know-how to make great games if they ever got back on their feet, but it does get me sad.
Thank you for all these years of Rare news everyone at Mundorare though
What a bunch of children you are.
You want to make a documentary about a company that has been unsuccessful in making successful products. The company says no, so you say “Oh, we’re closing down the site, sorry!”
The “for the community” dreck is just that: dreck. Admit that your website is focused around a developer that is on its way out, quality-wise, and without this “documentary”, you didn’t have anything to justify continuing the site.
And for some of the commenters: don’t equate the notion of “going corporate” and “making unsuccessful games”. If Microsoft didn’t take Rare, it would have been gone long ago.

Comment by ConK — 29.Jul.10 @ 7:10 amIt’s really a shame that a fansite has a better vision than the studio it supports. I was admin and designer for Rare-elite and helped on a Dutch Rare site but since Banjo N&B I just could not really believe in Rare anymore. To the critics I always used to say..”naaah, just wait until Rare brings back Banjo, then you’ll see the oldskool studio again…”, but it did not happen. With Banjo, Rare spilt it fanbase in two and left an unrepairable gap between the two parties.
A lot of work goes into maintaining an active fansite, especcially when everybody begins to loose the confidence that Rare will shine again. (And Rare is to blame, not Nintendo, not Microsoft…or was it MS saying that Banjo should include vehicles? for example.)
A shame for Mundo, but hats off that you delivered such an excellent site for 9 years. (I can see RWP going the same way)
Comment by Lupaie — 29.Jul.10 @ 7:48 amI understand Rare not wanting to participate in the film – they’ve always been very secretive, so I agree with that person who said it’s your own fault and that you seem to behave like children because of it.
On the other hand: this is a great website and it’s been around for a long time, and always been pretty professional and very supportive of Rare, so it would also be in their interrest to let you “in”. I mean – if they see a complete script first and know you’re not going to drag them through the soil, then why not? -surely they must have a PR department that can see the benefits of free publicity? Would it really be so bad to support a bunch of people who’s been so supportive of Rare over the years?
…but perhaps they just don’t care…which wouldn’t surprise me. It would be ‘very Rare’ to not care, but I honestly don’t care about them either – not anymore, because although being such a big part of my childhod (as Ultimate) they’re now only a shadow of their former selves.
Goodbye MundoRare. Please keep the website up.
…I’d say goodbye to Rare as well, but I did that years ago.
I heard Mundorare was offered an alternative by Rare and they refused it…. Mundorare’s way or the highway hey??
Comment by Gregg — 29.Jul.10 @ 10:13 amI think this is a really childish thing to do, why couldn’t you just come up with another way to celebrate 25 years of Rare instead of suiciding? It’s not like all those years of great games count for nothing just because they’re currently mkaing some stuff you personally don’t enjoy.
And the reality is you’re just running a fan site, you shouldn’t expect to be able to get permission to walk into Rare’s studio to film a documentary.
You’re letting users of this site like me down because of your egos.
dude.. that’s exactly it.. it’s a FAN site. and if you no longer like something, would you continue running a site for it? who cares about the reason why. if someone wanted you to run a fan site for martha stewart, you wouldn’t do it. you dont LIKE her. (i assume) i believe liking someone/something is the very most basic requirement to run a fan site. everyone just lay off mundo rare, we’re all pissed at rare for one reason or another. half of us left when banjo got fucked up, the rest have been tapering off day by day ever since because of a number of reasons like kinect, lack of sequels, lackluster performances. so if there’s one thing EVERYONE is in agreement with, is we are all disappointed in rare… so who cares if they don’t dislike them for the same reason as you. or maybe you do still like them, but w/e. you can’t force someone to keep an interest in something. this place has done great for 9 years, i’ve followed since i was 11 years old damn it. thats half my life, i appreciate what these guys have done, but let’s face it, they’re interested in hardcore games, and rare just isnt anymore. rare SAID they only want to focus on kinect for a while… so don’t expect anything normal or hardcore any times soon.
Comment by billy — 29.Jul.10 @ 2:54 pmWait wait wait… let me get this straight. Because you guys could not make a documentary about this game studio, you’re… shutting the whole website down??
I’m sorry but that makes little to no sense to me.
“rare won’t give us special treatment? we’ll just throw our toys out the pram, then!”
Comment by Techokami — 29.Jul.10 @ 3:36 pmBilly, I’m not sold on Kinect Sports either, but that doesn’t mean I’m suddenly not a fan of their other games – and for the record not all of us disliked Nuts & Bolts, I thought it was bloody good fun. Viva Pinata was excellent too.
Even if Rare never ever make a game I like again (which I doubt will be the case), it’s still possible to discuss, enjoy and be a fan of their older stuff.
Is the site going to be removed from the web completely? Because that would be a shame. If so, is there any chance it could be handed over to someone else who is still interested in Rare and could continue the site?
Comment by Dave — 29.Jul.10 @ 4:33 pmThis seems to be a bit melodramatic. Rare won’t help you make a documentary that says that Rare sucks now, and you’re… surprised?
I also don’t see the problem with them doing things for Kinect. It’s not as if that’s all they are doing, nor is it all they have done. Kameo, Viva Pinata, and Nuts and Bolts were all very enjoyable games for anyone willing to give them a chance, and I have no doubt that they will continue to make quality games.
So why doesn’t that, and their history of quality games, give them the benefit of the doubt? You’re really ending an entire website over Kinect and a documentary on the demise of Rare? Come on guys, stop and think for a few minutes.

It’s not dreck when the company you pour your passion into rejects you. Rare is alive but alive because they are on the teet of microsoft, NOT because they are a successful company. See Nintendo cut them lose because apparently something internally in the company was happening that was affecting their game development. It’s sad when are a company’s biggest title, in the hearts of many, is nearly 15 years ago. You can’t really be surprised that Rare is going the casual route, if you look at their long list of games they have games like Wheel of Fortune, Seasame Street 1,2,3 and a WWE (WWF At the time) games. Jesus Golden Eye was just put out to capture the movie tie in for pete’s sake; it was almost by accident that the game was good. I remember reviewers being shocked at how good a movie titled game was at the time. People bought perfect dark because it was supposed to somehow recapture the magic GE had, but didn’t.
Rare to me, imo, was a highly over rated company with some really lucky hits.. Battle Toads, Golden Eye, Diddy Kong Racing, DKC maybe, Killer Instinct, Banjo and conker are what they are known for. NOT RC pro-Am, or Wizards and Warriors with Fabio on the cover. These guys have every right to be disillusioned with the company, too bad it took them 10 years to figure that out.. Que sigen comiendo mierda, Rare. Rare is no different now than it was back in the 80s. A company of accidental conveniences..
Comment by Marcelo — 30.Jul.10 @ 1:33 amPity, time to move on to another company that isn’t Rare.
Comment by SamPD — 30.Jul.10 @ 1:52 pmWhile I do agree with some of what you say, you do sound like a petulant lots of kids, closing down a forum that a lot of people enjoy just because Rare don’t want to participate in a documentary made by people who obviously don’t like the games they make.
So are you saying that you wouldn’t be closing down the site if they’d agreed? And what exactly would the doc have consisted of? You blowing smoke up their behinds, or throwing a spotlight on the huge list of failures you believe them to have made? From the sounds of your statement, it doesn’t sound like you have lot of integrity. You’re disappointed in their output for the past 6 years, and yet you wanted to make a documentary about them. Pick a side for crying out loud.
If it’d been my decision, I would have told you where to go as well. I don’t particularly like Rare, but I respect them a whole lot more after this.
Comment by A-Joe — 30.Jul.10 @ 4:01 pmIt’s incredible Rare are still open, must be running at such a huge loss with nothing to show for it. I’m sure they’ll somehow survive after Sports and are lining up the excuses already. They’re a modern wonder of the world!
Comment by mrbaffo — 30.Jul.10 @ 4:27 pmI recently found this site, but I think it’s kind of an example of how most gaming studios are going to end up: less concerned with fans and trying to make good products and more concerned about the bottom line. I grew up playing classics like 007 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and it pains me to see that people who stuck with Rare with good memories in tow would get completely shut out.
@A-Joe: Come off your high horse, kid. These are people who enjoyed a companies’ products even through the bullshit. When a company loses its fans, all it has are the faceless masses and dumb casual players, which is all Rare is gearing towards now.
Comment by Astral — 30.Jul.10 @ 9:14 pmI actually though Kameo was great for a child’s game. There doesn’t need to be some hidden depth or extra unlockables to make a game just so it can suit high review scores. Kameo delivered just like Donkey Kong Country delivered to me when I was a child letting me run wild with different fantastical beasts and trying to solve small puzzles. It may have not been the hardest game but I have a child who thoroughly enjoys it and replays it just like I replayed DKC2 many times in my childhood. Nuts and Bolts felt like a fantastic game and the only reason I feel it got bad reviews was because it had Banjo. If they made a new mascot for that game I’m sure there would have been less nostalgic nuts whining over Banjo being in a different genre. The game let you create vehicles however you wanted and let you solve the challenges in a wide variety of ways only limited by your brain power to create a machine capable of accomplishing the goal. The only missteps I feel they have taken are doing remakes just to get some quick sales and the N64 crowd aboard. It was a stupid mistake to remake Conker because the gameplay doesn’t hold up anymore at all. Perfect Dark Zero was a big mess they created just to meet the launch lineup and for that reason I forgive them for that game because they didn’t have months to do playtesting to see if the game would be fun like other FPS creators do. Everything they have delivered this generation so far is great and yet you decide to quit because of a minor snag with your documentary and because their kinect game looks bad. I still have fate in them even though the bros are gone. It’s really sad you guys don’t anymore
Comment by That's a lame reason to quit — 31.Jul.10 @ 2:34 am@Astral: Surely this was a forum for fans of Rare’s games though? Seems like it was. Sure, they probably feel disillusioned by the fact that they got told no by Rare, but they respond by throwing their toys out of the pram and closing down the forum altogether. What about all the folks who still like Rare and came here for the community of it all? Isn’t that what a forum is? And then to release that statement “We actually didn’t like the games they’ve been releasing for the past six years anyway, so nehhr”, that’s the kind of thing my eight year old says if I turn off her cartoons.
I review books professionally, and regularly get knocked back for interviews by authors I admire the hell out of and praise on a regular basis. I wouldn’t declare my disgust and withdraw my support altogether though, and I certainly wouldn’t go on to say that “actually, everything they’ve written over the past decade has been terrible”.
Mundorare were, in their own words “a team of filmmaking and journalism graduates” who were obviously trying to monetise this project, and make a name for themselves with the doc. You can’t blame them. They’re not going to get anywhere though, if they stamp their foot every time they get turned down
Comment by A-Joe — 31.Jul.10 @ 11:20 amI was afraid this might happen some day!
I’m amazed how much of the fan-base is still alive, despite the fact that Rare has not released an acceptable title for the past decade and probably won’t deliver one in the foreseeable future.
Thanks a bunch, you guys!
Best to ya!
Comment by PDzero — 31.Jul.10 @ 11:09 pmYou can’t just demand access to a company’s time and resources and then throw a hissyfit when they say no. Something like that involves a lot of legal paperwork, ties up company time, could compromise projects, and takes control of public relations out of the hands of the company and into the hands of a bunch of amateurs.
Sounds like a bunch of naive journalism graduates got butt-hurt because they don’t understand how professional game developers operate.
The fact you posted this retaliatory “rare sux0rs now” bullcrap shows that they were right to turn you down. How ridiculously unprofessional.
Say what you want about Rare’s recent offerings, I’ll probably agree- but mudorare are in the wrong here.
Comment by daxternator — 01.Aug.10 @ 6:53 pmI can’t believe all the negative reactions towards Mundo.
People who respond with the age old argument “Thats how just how it works. Deal with it.” should shut their mouths. This is no excuse here. ( If ever )
Rare Ltd. should not receive any compassion at this point whatsoever and the choice by the Mundo staff to shutdown a 9 year-old site, that has done nothing but support Rare ltd., is not a choice made over night. As much as will mis this fabulous website, they made the right choice.
Rare has turned their back to all their fans to many times! As Daniel Carrington once said:
“Time to return the favor”
Comment by PDzero — 02.Aug.10 @ 12:40 amGood riddance. I used to be a fan of the site back when it was in Spanish. But as soon as Rare joined M$, the staff from this site suddenly got into Nintendo-bashin’ mode 24/7. It was a constant whining about how Nintendo didn’t support Rare and how said company ruined Rare’s games. Which is a bunch of baloney considering that Nintendo invested millions and man hours co-producing Rare games (just read the damn credits from most Rareware games of the N64 era). The fact that this site chooses to not only ignore that but also claim that the opposite was true, is the main reason as to why Mundorare became the Fox News of the gaming world. Unfair and unbalanced.
About the documentary: I’m not surprised Rare Ltd. told MundoRare to go screw themselves. Since they probably became aware of how this sites re-writes the history of the company or how they constantly portray Nintendo or MS in a false light.
The fact that you guys think that ONE game (Kinect Sports) is a good enough reason to stop supporting Rare, is pretty laughable. You guys are going away like a bunch of pansies that believe your balls will drop off by covering a Kinect game. I guess it was incredibly macho of you to cover games that featured a bunch of furry animals. But a game about sports? Oh noes. Let’s all quit before they make us join a Gay Pride Parade!
And the fact that you’re going away by blaming others (Rare, Nintendo, MS….. Obama)is pathetic.
Comment by Ed — 02.Aug.10 @ 8:10 amTruth is, Rare’s been dead for a long time. This company that exists today is far from being the one we learned to love. I fully support the MundoRare team’s decision.
Comment by Gustavo — 02.Aug.10 @ 10:20 pmAnd they didn’t stop supporting Rare only because they turned down the documentary project. And it wasn’t specifically because of the Kinect game, either. These disappointing events account for the ever-growing list of times Rare has let us down, with one game after the other in the past decade not nearly meeting our expectations. If they decided to stop supporting them, it’s because they probably disliked the newest game just like they had a difficult time swallowing the most recent ones. As most of us did. In such conditions, one wonders why the support should continue. Wouldn’t you? This wasn’t a decision made overnight. It’s something that probably came to their mind ages ago. And with Rare’s continued wrong actions, the idea grew on them until it met reality.
I don’t blame anyone for losing faith in Rare nowadays. It’s the humane thing to do, actually.
Good luck in your future endeavours!

Comment by Ark — 19.Aug.10 @ 2:07 amSo yeah I completely understand why you are leaving.
1)Rare literally has Kinect Sports coming out. While we all know it will be good, it’s not worth keeping a site running for a sports game, that is clearly Xbox’s “Wii Sports!”
2)The documentry was to give you guys something to do and in the mean time help sell some of Rare’s games on the 360! So denying this was actually just a bad call on their part.
3) Seriously what has Rare come too, They have four dev teams and now only push out what seems one game every two years.
4) And last but not least they have literally screwed their fan base over and over and over again.
Farewell Mundorare I will miss you!!!
